View the Enhanced News through Mail Champ.

Sept 1
-- Lynn Weber (R5 and web) forwarded an email that had been sent to her and Eleanor Harvey (parl) regarding a judging situation at NAN.

Sept 2
-- Pauline Entin (R3) was also disturbed by the allegation made and made a list of all judges that had seen the entries in question. She noted there was no clear pattern.

Sept 3
-- Carmen Robertson (treas) posted the June financial report summary:

June 2014 Summary

Balance in BOA checking as of 6/30/2014: 91,811.46
Balance in PayPal as of 6/30/2014: 61.26
Balance in NAMHSA accounts as of 6/30/2014: 91,872.72

-- Lynn Weber (R5 and web) advised that the original letter writer suggested looking at certain classes. Niki Hertzog (R9) said she remembered overhearing part of a conversation at NAN. She noted that certain types of entries were placing over others. Niki said that some of her own entries were not placing that had done well at other shows, and perhaps that was why other entries were not placing. Lynn Weber (R5 and web) posted a conversation that she had in relation to the topic. Kathy Williams (R2) asked if specific names could be given regarding the situation.

Eleanor did report that a judge on day 2 stated she was getting tired and just placing the first 10 horses she saw. Eleanor did not give this person any further judging assignments and suggested not hiring her again.

Sept 4
-- Teresa Buzzell (VP) reminded Natalie Kilpatrick (PR) to post the June 2014 News.

-- Teresa Buzzell (VP) requested an update on the contracts for the hotel and convention center.

-- Teresa Buzzell (VP) asked several BOD members to contact other hobbyists for specifics about the potential issue from NAN.

-- Carmen Robertson (treas) posted a cross list of NAN judges based on actual people judging and lists from prior to NAN. She later reported that judge's checks had gone out, and was working on volunteers.

Sept 5
- Discussion continued about the reported judging issue from NAN. Lynn Weber (R5 and web) reported that names were not known at the time.

Sept 6
-- Lynn Weber (R5 and web) noted that a hobbyist had mentioned she submitted a proposal to the BOD in October 2013 but did not find any mention of it in the archives. As no one else remembered it, it was suggested that she be requested to clarify the statement ("I spoke to so and so" vs a formal proposal).

-- There was ongoing discussion about how to handle NAN judging issues.

Sept 7
-- Avenues of investigation, including questioning people involved in handling judges, continued. Niki Hertzog (R9) suggested surveying judges closer to the end of NAN.

Sept 8
-- Teresa Buzzell (VP) suggested adding a more involved judge meeting to each morning at NAN to review protocols on dealing with impropriety at any level during the show to hopefully get ahead of issues, if not completely stop them.

Sept 9
-- Natalie Kilpatrick (PR) advised that the June News had gone out.

-- Stacy Quick (R1) asked for an update on the status of a refund for NAN for a member in her region.

-- Niki Hertzog (R9) offered to help in investigating judges for the NAN situation. She had a report later the same day. Niki included the Excel file with her research for others to examine.

Sept 10
-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) posted the August 16-31 minutes for approval.

-- Teresa Buzzell (VP) moved to grant a 50% refund to the member who was unable to get to NAN due to circumstances beyond her control. This was seconded by Sharon Mossy (R10). Discussion was called.

-- Sharon Mossy (R10) reported that she had talked to another judge regarding the issue from NAN. She posted her response.

--Eleanor Harvey (parl) expressed frustration that the BOD had no knowledge of this other issue that was mentioned in her reply, as there had been no formal debrief from the 2014 NAN chair.

-- Lynn Weber (R5 and web) requested an update from Niki Hertzog (R9) on 3 open auction lots.

Sept 11
-- Sharon Mossy (R10) posted a clarification on the judge issue.

-- Teresa Buzzell (VP) asked Sharon to have the judge give names so future issues could be addressed.

-- Dayle Steinke (MAR) expressed concerns that people seemed to be afraid to report issues to the BOD and wondered about setting up an anonymous reporting system for issues to allow the BOD to address them.

Sept 13
-- Discussion and clarification continued about the NAN-Qualifying show with a potential ghost holder.

-- Sharon Mossy (R10) posted an email regarding the judge issue.

Sept 15
-- Eleanor Harvey (parl) advised that a poll could be started about the NAN refund as soon as it was called for by Teresa Buzzell (VP).

-- Teresa Buzzell (VP) requested an update on the contracts for the hotel and convention center.

-- Lynn Weber (R5 and web) posted an email she had gotten from a member in her region about an upcoming show where a horse a judge had customized would be showing. She asked how to handle the situation.

-- Teresa Buzzell (VP) recommended leaving the horse at home. Others responding to the post agreed with Teresa.

-- Chris Wallbruch (MSOTY) posted an email regarding the judge situation.

Lynn Weber (R5 and web) stated that this issue was wrapped and would report back to those who'd brought up the issue.

-- Sharon Mossy (R10) asked if she could contact Auld's about the trophy she was due. Teresa Buzzell (VP) asked if Sharon knew how many other people needed a trophy. Sharon reported she did not and that the 2014 NAN chair would have that information.

Sept 16
-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) requested approval of the August 16-31 minutes (posted on Sept 10) and stated she would not post the September 1-15 minutes until the August ones were approved. Teresa Buzzell (VP) approved the August minutes.

-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) pointed out that with the issue of the shower posted by Lynn Weber (R5 and web) the previous day that if the show was double judged, the horse could still be shown, but the judge who created the horse skip the horse in question. Lynn reported the show was double judged and this may work.

-- Jenna Murphy (R8) offered to create a judge's handbook for NAMHSA, saying she could create one that would be low cost, easily updated and could be printed on demand.

--Teresa Buzzell (VP) reminded the BOD that it was against NAMHSA rules to allow a shower to show at a show where they were assuming show holder duties.

-- Sharon Mossy (R10) posted a list of trophy winners for day 3 of NAN and asked if there was a way to contact them to find out if they were due a trophy or not. Teresa Buzzell (VP) said she would talk to Jim West about it.

Sept 17
-- At Teresa Buzzell's (VP) request, Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) started the following poll:

Should we refund 50% of the NAN entry fees?

Yes
No
Abstain

Please respond with your vote by 9/22

-- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) posted the September 1-15, 2014 minutes.

-- Chris Wallbruch (MSOTY) advised that she had been contacted by a runner up for member show of the year about certificates. Chris had not done these before and asked who normally handled them.

Sept 18
-- Kathy WIlliams (R2) asked if there had been any action regarding the contracts for Palm Springs.

-- Teresa Buzzell (VP) offered to do the MSOTY certificates as she had done them in the past.

Sept 19
-- Stacy Quick (R1) forwarded an email from one of her members about expanding the definition of fantasy models.

There was some discussion. Many reps reported not seeing large numbers of these models despite classes being held for them. Niki Hertzog (R9) had concerns about how fantasy and decorator models were currently handled.

Kathy Williams (R2) felt that the current restrictions were too strict, and that people in her region had fantasy models that did not fit in the current definitions such as centaurs, dragon horses and bat horses. It was pointed out that bat horses would fit as a pegasus given how the creature is defined by NAMHSA policies.

Sept 20
-- Pauline Entin (R3) made the following motion: I motion we discontinue use of the Forum as the platform for NAMHSA Board discussion and return to either the Yahoo groups platform or a similar, email (vs. website) based platform. She requested that if there was no second, that the forum at least have an official vote to be the platform for BOD communications. Jackie Moore (R6) seconded and discussion ensued.

Sept 21
-- Teresa Buzzell (VP) posted an open letter addressed to Tom Dean (pres) to the forum and several other avenues of communication requesting that he work on his communication and BOD involvement / participation immediately.

-- Teresa Buzzell (VP) advised she would get the MSOTY runner up certificates emailed to Chris Wallbruch (MSOTY) next week.

Sept 22
-- Tom Dean (Pres) approved the September 1-15 minutes.

-- The following poll closed:

Should we refund 50% of the NAN entry fees?

-Stacy Quick (R1)
-Kathy WIlliams (R2)
-Pauline Entin (R3)
-Lindsay Diamond (R4)
-Lynn Weber (R5)
-Jackie Moore (R6)
-Niki Hertzog (R9)
-Sharon Mossy (R10)
-Sandra Gibson (R11)
-Teresa Buzzell (VP)

Sept 23
-- Jackie Moore (R6) posted an email and reply she had from one of her regional members. The Board felt that Jackie's email was the correct response.

-- Teresa Buzzell (VP) asked Natalie Kilpatrick (PR) for the July and August News.

-- Teresa Buzzell (VP) Advised she would let the NAMHSA member know her refund had been approved and asked Carmen Robertson (treas) to cut the check.

Sept 24
-- Jackie Moore (R6) forwarded a reply from her region's member about Jackie's response to her previous email.

Sept 25
-- There were questions about the revised contract with the NAN 2015 venue, specifically centered on the Internet connections. The current contract had 4 dedicated connections. There were questions as to if all 4 were actually needed. Niki Hertzog reported only using 2 in 2013.

Sept 26
-- Niki Hertzog (R9), citing the time sensitive nature of the release, drafted a press release for current NAMHSA auction items and requested that it be sent via MailChimp. Niki would handle other outlets.

-- Chris Wallbruch (MSOTY) posted a suggestion from a hobbyist about having a category for new shows in the Member Show of The Year award. Those responding felt this was a good idea, but wondered how "new" would be defined (first time show holder vs first time a specific show is being held).

Sept 27
-- Natalie Kilpatrick (PR) posted a draft for the Show Secretary position. Teresa Buzzell (VP) requested Amy Peck's (SMS) input on the accuracy of the job description.

-- NAN 2015 contract discussion continued, with a question about the switch from the A/B rooms to B/C/D. B/C/D was a slightly larger space, while A/B was a little more expensive. The room shape and location of A/B made it seem like a better option. Kathy Williams (R2) also felt that charges for the podium and PA system were excessive and suggested a counteroffer.

R5
Region 5 took July off from hosting shows but had a couple of fun days in Texas and Kansas. In Texas we had a day full of real miniature horses, horse trading and food. Kansas had a fun playday where models and props got worked on.

August is another quiet month in Region 5, but September brings us three shows: Labor Day Live in Magnolia, TX (9/1) and Hooftoberfest in Irving, TX (9/20), and Mid Kansas All Mini Halter Show in Rose Hill, KS (9/27). Two of Texas's shows have had to been postponed or canceled this year. Lone Star Live will be back next spring and Model Horse Expo is canceled this year, but we have a new one in Tulsa, Oklahoma on 10/4, OK Model Horse Live. We do have two November shows, Mid Ark Model Horse Expo in Greenbrier, AR (11/1) and Silver Spur Live on the Bayou in Sulphur, LA (11/8 - 11/9) that will hopefully provide enough of a model horse "fix" to tide us over until spring.

Hello All!

There were two shows in Region 6 in August.

Florida Cracker Live was held August 16 in Parrish, FL. This was another awesome, well-run show with top-notch competition and a delicious catered lunch. I had a wonderful time!

Palmetto State Live was held August 30 in Irmo, SC. Hostess Lisa Garcia found a new, larger venue for this show series and this show was also well-attended and well-run. I hear the competition was super tough!

There are no shows scheduled in Region 6 in September, but there are two shows scheduled for October. The 27th Annual Southern Model Horse Convention will be held in Covington, GA on October 4th. And a brand-new show - Haunted Horses Live - will be held in Orlando, FL on October 18!

See you at the shows!

Jackie Moore

Starting in Illinois: the second annual Giddy Up show was a huge success, giving out books as awards (awesome!). and they are planned for next year as well, same weekend. I was told this show was booked for the next several years. It was a smaller show, so they are looking at marketing ideas. GLC started their show season in Huntley, absolutely packed and filled with a whole new generation of young faces! They were thrilled with any ribbon they took home. Lots of great raffles as well. They have their second show next month.

Indiana- quiet.

Michigan- The Michigan Model series is back on, starting with their performance show. Michigan has a lot of these wonderful shows that always sell out quickly. The performance show was one of these that filled up quickly with a lot of great competition. Get up and check one of these shows out! An all mini show from the series was held towards the end of the month.

Missouri- quiet.

Baystate Models Live was held this September over two days and had an excellent turn out with lots of entrants, including 10 novices on the 6th! This is wonderful news and very encouraging. Jill O'Connor, Jackie Arns Rossi, and Robin Briscoe also held a judging clinic after hours on the 6th with a great turn out of new, prospective judges.

There are no more shows in Region 10 in September, but October brings several shows to the Region, including:

Albany Area Regional, being held from October 5-6 in East Greenbush, NY. Performance is on the 5th and Halter is on the 6th.

New England Performance Challenge, being held October 18 in Spencer, MA. If you're a performance shower, here's another chance for you to get out there and have a blast!

Vermont Live Model Horse Show, being held October 26 in Williston, VT. This show is for novices and intermediates. Ever thought about showing - this is the show to start at!

Sadly, Finger Lakes Open Classic was cancelled - let's hope for it's return next year!

The Region X Championships, being held November 8-9 in Albany, NY. This is our year-end show, and a must-go! It features two shows in one, really - with an Open Division and the Stakes Classes.

As always, more information for each show can be found on the Region 10 website: http://www.regionxnation.com/
