NAMHSA - August 2014 News
NAMHSA News for the period of August 2014 based on the minutes recorded by Jackie Arns-Rossi, NAMHSA Recording Secretary. Aug 1 -- Discussion continued on issues with OF china test models at NAN. Eleanor Harvey (parl) pointed out that there had not been a printed copy of the NAN show packet at the podium or with the Chair or Registrar for them to refer to when entrants had issues with horses that were disqualified. Eleanor advised she was still putting together her thoughts on handling stewards and future Chairs without overwhelming them with information. -- Jenna Murphy (R8) noted that the show in question was in Region 4. Lynn Weber (R5 and web) asked for more details about the issue and complaints. -- Lynn Weber (R5 and web) asked the BOD to consider running a full page in ad in the newly announced Model Horse Directory. Aug 3 -- Tom Dean (Pres) approved the July 16-31 minutes. Aug 4 -- Teresa Buzzell (VP) noted that the deadline had passed for discussion on the requested NAN entry refund and asked Eleanor Harvey (parl) if a formal poll was needed. Aug 5 -- Eleanor Harvey (parl) reported that she was starting to get queries from judges as to when their honorariums could be expected, and asked Carmen Robertson (treas) to follow up. -- The situation regarding the NAMHSA qualified show that was suspected of having a ghost showholder was investigated. Aug 6 -Niki Hertzog (R9) asked for a clear run down on exactly what was being alleged in this situation in R4. Several other BOD members also expressed concerns that these serious accusations were being made anonymously. While the identity of the person making the accusation would not be made public, in order for the board to deal with the situation, all facts had to be made clear and needed to be credible. Jenna Murphy (R8) posted a letter received regarding the show. Aug 7 -- Niki Hertzog (R9) suggested that a letter from the Region Rep be sent to the parties involved to verify information. It was suggested that Amy Peck (SMS) pull past applications for the show to see who had submitted them. -- Carmen Robertson (treas) uploaded the second quarter report to the YG files. Aug 8 -- Teresa Buzzell (VP) advised she had also been asked about when judge’s honorariums would be going out. -- Teresa Buzzell (VP) asked Eleanor Harvey (parl) for a ruling on the NAN refund discussion from earlier in the month. Aug 9 -- A draft of an email was posted that would be sent out to the parties involved with the ghost showholder. Teresa Buzzell (VP) asked that she and Tom Dean (pres) be Cced on the email when it was sent out. Aug 10 -- Pauline Entin (R3) advised that she had just sent queries to her region about one person/one vote, and asked if the BOD would be voting on it eventually. She realized a BOD vote would be to send the question to the members. Aug 12 -- Carmen Robertson (treas) advised she was still waiting on Yashka Hallein (NAN chair) for a list of people who needed to be paid. She reported that so far she had only paid auction donors. Carmen later reported that she had emailed Yashka about it. -- Amy Peck (SMS) reported to the BOD information about the R4 show. --Niki Hertzog (R9) expressed concerns about the posts and behavior occurring on a Facebook page promoting NAN 2015 and from Model Horse Blab. She posted and linked screen caps for all to view. Discussion ensued and BOD members responding felt that while Niki had valid concerns, the better course of action would be to allow the drama to run its own course and to promote the official FaceBook page for NAN 2015 more heavily. Aug 13 -- Tom Dean (Pres) posted the venue contract for NAN 2015 for approval from the BOD. Aug 14 --The parties involved with the show in Region 4 had been emailed and both responded. Their responses were posted. --Discussion about the NAN 2015 hotel contract continued. Aug 17 -- Annette Dean (R7) reported that Kristina Lucas Francis was asking for a decision on her questions about the china test models at NAN. Discussion continued. -- Annette Dean (R7) did not recommend signing the hotel contract as it stood. Niki Hertzog (R9) agreed, and did not understand why NAMHSA was pursuing a room block. She also asked if signing the contract with the hotel was contingent on having the venue for the show. Aug 18 -- Tom Dean (pres) felt that the wording on the china tests at NAN should be tightened. He asked china showers for their opinions. Aug 19 -- Teresa Buzzell (VP) advised Tom Dean (Pres) that he had requested time to edit the April News 19 days earlier. She advised that if he did not post his edits, she would have Natalie Kilpatrick (PR) send the News out the following day. -- Kathy Williams (R2) gave her thoughts on the china tests at NAN issue. Discussion continued on the topic. Aug 20 -- Natalie Kilpatrick (PR) posted an edit of the April 2014 News for approval. These were approved by Teresa Buzzell (VP). Natalie also posted a draft of the May 2014 News for approval. Aug 21 -- Natalie Kilpatrick (PR) posted the June 2014 News for approval. -- Niki Hertzog (R9) gave a report on the NAN Auction results. Her report stated that she started with 17 lots. Two withdrew for health reasons. Two others she never did get information on despite repeated requests so withdrew those, leaving it with 13 lots. Out of the 13 lots that went to auction 3 were still open. One is waiting on payment, and two others she was waiting to hear back on second-chance offers. Total for paid auctions (not including the open ones, includes shipping amounts): $3,196.60 Payments to artists (not including Lots 1 or 2): $780 Shipping for items: $135.35 Profit from paid lots: $2,281.25 Outstanding Lots (assuming current high bids hold): $850 Payments to artists for outstanding lots: $165 She also recommended that a bidder be banned in the future from participating in NAMHSA auctions for reasons of non-payment of lots this year. It was suggested that a non-paying bidder disclaimer be added to all future NAMHSA auctions to try to negate these types of issues as well as handling how non-paying bidders in the future. Aug 22 -- Lynn Weber (R5 and web) advised that Mary Thompson was posting updates about the 2015 NAN hotel that NAMHSA did not have yet. She requested that Mary be asked to not post such details until the BOD had a chance to review them. -- Several other BOD members voiced concerns about the hotel contract and did not want to sign it as it stood. There were also questions if NAMHSA had ever had a room block before. Aug 24 -- Pauline Entin (R3) cautioned the board about adding on new paid positions (photographer, and announcer) without having a way to reduce costs to cover the new paid positions. -- Pauline Entin (R3) disagreed with Kathy Williams (R2) on some points- she had a small production test color that lacked details and was similar to a larger factory test color. She also asked where the line should be drawn with horses that were produced in very small numbers. Pauline agreed more with Jackie Moore’s (R6) assessments. Kathy agreed that not all tests were the same, and felt that tests had a competitive edge given their rarity, and therefore should be shown with other tests. More discussion occurred regarding the China divisions and placement of tests and OOAK in regards to NAN. -- Natalie Kilpatrick (PR) advised that another update on the hotel had been posted to Facebook without the BOD being aware of the details. Teresa Buzzell (VP) asked Tom Dean (pres) to step in. Aug 25 -- Tom Dean (pres) approved the May 2014 News. -- Carmen Robertson (treas) advised she had the final bill from Heritage Hall, but still did not have a list of judges and other volunteers from Yashka Hallein (NAN chair) to send checks out the NAN staff. She also specifically asked if she could pay Jim West (NAN Registrar.) Tom Dean (pres) okayed paying Heritage Hall and Jim West. -- Tom Dean (pres) posted an email reply to Kristina Lucas Francis to the BOD for discussion. Teresa Buzzell (VP) did not agree with sending it as is. -- Tom Dean (pres) replied with answers to BOD member questions regarding the hotel. -- Tom Dean (pres) reported that the convention center contract was sent back unsigned and corrections requested. Aug 26 -- Teresa Buzzell (VP) asked Tom Dean (pres) to post the September agenda. Lynn Weber (R5 and web) asked to add posting for the Show Secretary position as Amy Peck’s term was up in a few months. --Natalie Kilpatrick (PR) noted that the email Tom Dean (pres) sent to the BOD appeared to have been sent to Kristina Lucas Francis, as she had started a discussion on the Region 7 Facebook page about it. Several BOD members were confused that the email had been sent, as they thought it had been a draft. Discussion continued regarding the hotel and convention center contracts. Aug 27 --Sharon Mossy (R10) asked for an update regarding stipends owed for volunteers at NAN 2015. Suggestions of pulling lists of names off of results and trying to recreate volunteer lists were discussed. Aug 28 -- Tom Dean (pres) posted the September agenda: 1. Finish 2014 NAN review including OFC and CMG definitions 2. 1 person/1vote --prepare for membership vote 3. Database--prepare for membership vote 4. Code of Conduct --Teresa Buzzell (VP) was not in favor of recreating a staff list, when this was part of the NAN Chair duties. Aug 29 -- Natalie Kilpatrick (PR) felt that it was time for NAMHSA to take over and get the staff paid. Lynn Weber (R5 and web) offered to compare staff lists that had been supplied prior to NAN against show results to try and create a staff list. -- Sharon Mossy (R10) also noted she was due a T shirt and 2 NAN cookies. Niki Hertzog (R9) suggested contacting the caster and Auld’s directly about the cookies and listed the contact info. -- Teresa Buzzell (VP) also brought up concerns about NAN judges still not being paid, noting that questions about when pay would arrive for judges were starting to pop up on social media. She called out to Tom Dean (pres) and stated this needed to be dealt with immediately. She noted that NAMHSA lacked any sort of consequences written into NAN position descriptions in the case of a post failing to complete all its duties before receiving a stipend. She asked Tom to give a firm deadline to turn in the master lists of staff in order to pay them. She also asked the BOD if a stipend needed to be changed as if all the duties of the position were not filled. Teresa also discouraged future NAN chairs from doing their own promotional materials (T shirts, glassware, etc) as this added more work to a position that already required a lot of effort. She suggested the fundraising chair or another BOD member consider taking these things on. She also reported paying Heritage Hall and Jim West. She had no bill from Auld’s suggesting additional cookies had been ordered. She also noted housekeeping issues with paying one judge and recommended that all future judges and volunteers be advised that payments would be sent in the form of a check or PayPal only, no cash due to issues with accounting for it. Kathy Williams, R2 Rep R3 Region 3 Report - August 2014 We had no shows in the Region in July, but several member of our Region traveled to NAN and Breyerfest in Kentucky this year. In fact, both the NAN 2014 Chair and Registrar are from Region 3 - that's setting a high bar! Congratulations to Region 3 members on your NAMHSA volunteerism, and your showing successes. We did have a couple of member shows in Region 3 on the first weekend in August - Red Devil Live OF Plastic in Golden, CO. Show holder Teresa Fedak reports that turnout was excellent. She said, "It was great to see so many people, familiar faces as well as several new ones. There were lots of gorgeous horses! Judging was very tough, so many horses deserved firsts and NAN cards, but I could only place so many..... I had a fun day, hope everyone else did too! Looking forward to the next Red Devil Live!" The second member show of that weekend was 900 miles to the Southwest in toasty Tucson, Arizona. This show was an all performance affair hosted by Deb and Dani Ash. Entrant Pat McDonald reports that each class was quite full and competition was tough. Evidently the air conditioning left a bit to be desired, alternating between way too cold and way too hot. From what I heard, the awards were fantastic and despite the environmental conditions, everyone had a great time. We have another member show coming up on August 16 in Golden, CO. This show will be for OF Stone models, with classes for custom glaze models thrown in for...balance. We will have another Stone-focused show on Sept 7 in Phoenix hosted by Teresa Candelaria. High Country Live in Colorado will follow on Sept 14, and Teresa's OF Breyer show will round out September on Sept 27. More details about these shows are available on the NAMHSA website. Tucson Mountain Live hostess Pat McDonald is considering trying the Eastern regions' custom of concurrent judging - judging breed halter and collectibility or workmanship at the same time (with two different judges). This will be a new foray for Region 3, and several of us are curious to see how it will go. Suggestions from regions experienced in this practice are welcome. Looking toward fall - Pauline Entin Representative R4 July has come and gone and many Region 4 members participated in NAN and BF Live shows. Congratulations to everyone who attended and won some NAN cookies and ribbons and BF prizes! There is one show in August, Spirit Horse Live in Council Bluffs, IA, hosted by Molly Pengra. The show is August 9th and will benefit Hooves and Paws Rescue of Glenwood, IA. http://spirithorselive2014.webs.com/ There are no shows yet in September, but October brings 4 shows: The 1st annual Central Plains live, hosted by Natalie Kilpatrick in Fremont, NE (just NW of Omaha) - and it's sold out!! The 3rd Annual Jackson County 4-H and Open Show in Black River Falls, WI. Deb Johnson has hosted this show for the last two years and continues to do a great job.http://jcmodelhorseshow.webs.com The 3rd show is the Sinewa Model Horse show, hosted by Greg Stebnitz in Valders, WI. South Dakota gets in on the action with the Black Hills Model Horse Show in Rapid City, SD. Debbie Vick is the contact for this show. I want to say hello to everyone in Region 4! I look forward to working with all of you and hopefully meeting more of you at shows! I will be attending Central Plains Live and can't wait to meet many of you there. R5 Another NAN and Breyerfest have come and gone! Region 5 had a good turnout at NAN and brought home many rosettes and cookies, even some of our first time NAN-goers! Congratulations! August is another quiet month in Region 5, but September brings us three shows: Labor Day Live in Magnolia, TX (9/1) and Hooftoberfest in Irving, TX (9/20), and Mid Kansas All Mini Halter Show in Rose Hill, KS (9/27). Two of Texas's shows have had to been postponed or canceled this year. Lone Star Live will be back next spring and Model Horse Expo is canceled this year, but we have a new one in Tulsa, Oklahoma on 10/4, OK Model Horse Live. We do have two November shows, Mid Ark Model Horse Expo in Greenbrier, AR (11/1) and Silver Spur Live on the Bayou in Sulphur, LA (11/8 - 11/9) that will hopefully provide enough of a model horse "fix" to tide us over until spring. R6 Hello All! I hope everyone had a great time in Kentucky during NAN/Breakables/Breyerfest/Equilocity! It was great to see so many region members up there, as well as meet up with friends from far-off regions. Congratulations to everyone on your many successes at the shows there! The show season in Region 6 begins anew with Florida Cracker Live in Parrish, FL on August 16, as well as Palmetto State Live in Jenkinsville, SC on August 30. Unfortunately, Hollow Horse Live (scheduled for September 13 in Cumming, GA) has been cancelled, so the next show up on the calendar is the 27th Annual Southern Model Horse Convention in Covington, GA on Oct 4. There are also plans afoot for Haunted Horses Live (a brand new show!) to be held near Orlando, FL on October 11. Stay tuned for details! See you at the shows! Jackie Moore R7 Region 7 Report July was a very busy month for us. Besides the NAN show, we also had three region shows – Breakables Live hosted by Heather Malone, Jackie Arns-Rossi, and Stacy Faraci. There was also the Open Breyerfest show hosted by Michelle Masters , and the Stone Equilocity show hosted by Amy Showalkter. All these shows were well attended and had some awesome horses on the tables. We enjoyed visiting with some of our old friends and got a chance to make new friends. No shows to report for August but we have Treaty City Live in Greenville, Ohio coming up on September 13th hosted by Kay Callahan. The show is a benefit show for the Darke County Humane Society. The web link for the show is: http://treatycitylive.weebly.com/ We hope everyone is having a great summer ! Annette Dean Region 7 Rep R8 Can you believe August is almost over, and the fall show season is just about to begin? Although I was unable to attend due to amount of weddings I need to attend this year, I heard once again that Breyerfest was a big hit, and there were plenty of models to drool over and friends to meet. July also brought another successful NAN, and I am so happy to say that ILLINOIS had the most showers in attendance- woot woot!! Till next month, there are several shows to talk about! R9 No report. R10 Region 10 August Report As far as recent shows, several people from Region 10 were showing at Breyerfest, NAN, and Equilocity! Region 10 did well at all three shows and it was a blast to be there with several of my fellow Region 10 friends. It's always a horse-crazy week, that's for sure! Autumn (yes, it's getting close!!) brings many shows to the Region, including: Baystate Models Live, being held from September 6-7 in Boxborough, MA. This show is a very well-run show and also a well-attended show. Albany Area Regional, being held from October 5-6 in East Greenbush, NY. This is another two-day show! New England Performance Challenge, being held October 18 in Spencer, MA. If you're a performance shower, this show is absolute MUST to attend! Finger Lakes Open Classic, being held October 18 in Horseheads, NY. This show has SEVEN divisions, including separate mini divisions! Vermont Live Model Horse Show, being held October 26 in Williston, VT. This show is for novices and intermediates. Ever thought about showing - this is the show to start at! The Region X Championships, being held November 8-9 in Albany, NY. This is our year-end show, and a mustgo! It features two shows in one, really - with an Open Division and the Stakes Classes. As always, more information for each show can be found on the Region 10 website: http://www.regionxnation.com/ ~Sharon Mossy~ Region 10 Rep R11 No report.
