NAMHSA - April 1-30, 2014 News
NAMHSA News for the period of April 1-30, 2014 based on the minutes compiled by Jackie Arns-Rossi, Recording Secretary. Apr 1 -- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) posted the March 15-30, 2015 minutes for approval. -- Teresa Buzzell (pres) advised that the showholder Lindsay Diamond (SMS and R4) asked about could not just move up the third place horse. Options were to ask entrants directly what horse placed in the class in question, or send results to entrants for editing and see if the correction was made. If the correction were not named, the results as they were would stand. -- Kathy Williams (R2) felt that NAMHSA should not allow video or music as part of the documentation required at NAN. Teresa Buzzell (pres) advised that at this time, NAMHSA did not have rules about either at NAN and did not police it at the local show level. Apr 2 -- The following poll closed: Does the BOD accept this change to the bylaws, pending approval by a membership vote? Section 7 - Scheduling of Changes. Changes approved by the member shows and individual members shall become effective immediately unless noted otherwise on the membership voting ballot. -yes -Stacy Quick (R1) -Kathy Williams (R2) -Pauline Entin (R3) -Lindsay Diamond (R4) -Lynn Weber (R5) -Jackie Moore (R6) -Annette Dean (R7) -Niki Hertzog (R9) -Sharon Mossy (R10) -no -abstain Did not vote: Jenna Murphy (R8), Sandra Gibson (R11), Kim Bjorgo-Thorne (VP) Apr 3 -- The following poll closed: Does the BOD accept the proposed class list for the 2015 NAN? - yes -Stacy Quick (R1) -Kathy Williams (R2) -Lindsay Diamond (R4) -Lynn Weber (R5) -Jackie Moore (R6) -Annette Dean (R7) -Niki Hertzog (R9) -Sharon Mossy (R10) -Sandra Gibson (R11) - no - abstain -Pauline Entin (R3) Did not vote: Jenna Murphy (R8) and Kim Bjorgo Thorne (VP) -- Teresa Buzzell (pres) approved the March 16-31 minutes. -- Kim Bjorgo Thorne (VP) forward an email she had received from a representative of the British Model Equine Championships (BMECS) notifying NAMHSA of a new representative for their organization. Apr 5 -- Teresa Buzzell (pres) called for final edits to the NAN show packet. -- Lynn Weber (web and R5) posted copies of correspondence between her and a potential programmer regarding potential costs of a nationwide database. -- Teresa Buzzell (pres) posted the April agenda: If anyone wonders, no, I did not do a March agenda. Here's a rework of what was done for February fitted for April with some changes: Currently working on: 1 Person/1 Vote - almost ready for a vote Finish NAN Program discussion & vote Currently stalled: -Database (need costs before we can vote on it - motion tabled pending that information) NEW Stuff! Top Priority: Discussion changing judging criteria for Stone collectibility - Niki Hertzog has a proposal she'd like to present. Find a VP candidate! Ongoing NAN stuff as it relates to the entry process and the show itself. Discuss the possibility of searching out a different KY location Kick around the idea of going from 3 judges to 1 judge. Pros, cons, cost analysis, etc. It seems to be a topic that crops up every single year, perhaps it's time to actually do a little more in depth thinking? Apr 6 -- Chris Wallbruch (MSOTY) advised she had sent out requests for panelists for MSOTY to the regional lists on both Yahoo groups and Facebook. --Kim Bjorgo-Thorne (VP) moved to discuss advertising in Morgen Kilbourne’s upcoming hobby directory. This was seconded by Niki Hertzog (R9). Teresa Buzzell (pres) advised this was already a done deal. -- Kim Bjorgo- Thorne (VP) offered to use Survey Monkey to poll the general membership about thoughts on the 1 vs 3 judges at NAN. She also offered to do a costs/benefits analysis in June, once her work duties had lightened up. -- Niki Hertzog (R9) posted a proposal about changing judging criteria for OF Stone horses in collectibility classes at NAN: “Proposal to modify OF Collectibility criteria for Stone Horses at NAN. I believe that we should consider modifying the wording for the name and judging criteria for OF Collectibility as it pertains to Peter Stone model horses at NAN. The current wording in the show packet is: Judging Guidelines The following guidelines are to be followed in the judging of classes at NAN. Collectibility: - Rarity - Age - Condition - Desirability - Judge’s overall impression While this criteria may have originally worked to judge Stone models, I don't think it is applicable any longer. Specifically, the first two criteria that are the most critical to the idea of Collectibility are not items that have much bearing on the way Stones are currently judged in Non-Breed Halter. Realistically, a horse that is part of a run of 30 produced just six months before the show, stands as good, if not better chance of pinning well than a test model from 15 years ago. According to our criteria, that should be the opposite. But in many cases, that older test run may fail to even qualify for NAN over some of the newer models. Much of this has to do with desirability, but also do with a heightened level of craftsmanship from the company and the way Stones are viewed by the general hobby public. This is not generally the case with many of the other plastic horses where a horse that is older and rarer will usually do better than a brand new counterpart, even with a plainer or more simplistically executed paint job. The fact is that many Stone classes in what we call Collectibility are actually judged on standards that more accurately fit a description of Workmanship. This is true at both local shows and at NAN itself. In 2013 we moved the Stone Collectibility classes away from the traditional size/run groupings and into a framework based on the mold used for the model. I think this is the first step toward a re-envisioning of this division to more accurately represent what is realistically happening when these classes are judged. I propose that we rename the OFP Collectibility division to "OFP Breyer/Other Collectibility and Stone Workmanship" OR divide them into two divisions bearing those names. We should also modify the judging criteria to add a new category of "Stone Workmanship" and modify the category of Collectibility to "Breyer/Other Collectibility". The category of Stone Workmanship should have the following criteria: - Quality and execution of finish work - Accuracy/correctness/realism of customization (if applicable) - Condition - Desirability - Age/Rarity - Accuracy and realism of color for realistic or creative use of color for non-realistics - Judge's Overall Impression I think these criteria blend together the Collectibility criteria that are actually utilized in NAN judging for Stones with aspects of the CM/AR/CMG Workmanship criteria that are commonly used when judging OF Stone horses in classes other than Breed Halter. It also reorganizes the criteria to give strength to the items that are most utilized by judges in these classes while de-emphasizing the criteria like Age which can have only modest bearing on the outcome of a class.” Kim Bjorgo-Thorne (VP) moved to accept the proposal. Teresa Buzzell (pres) seconded and discussion began. Apr 7 -- Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) advised that there were no nominated candidates for vice president. -- Brief discussion continued on the topic of how many judges should be used per class at NAN. Suggestions included having some classes with a single judge, some with 2 and some with 3, as this could be used to gauge entrant acceptance of the idea. -- The following poll closed: Does the BOD accept the proposed class list for the 2015 NAN? - yes -Stacy Quick (R1) -Kathy WIlliams (R2) -Lindsay Diamond (R4) -Lynn Weber (R5) -Jackie Moore (R6) -Annette Dean (R7) -Niki Hertzog (R9) -Sharon Mossy (R10) -Sandra Gibson (R11) - no - abstain -Pauline Entin (R3) Did not vote: Jenna Murphy (R8) and Kim Bjorgo Thorne (VP) -- There was ongoing discussion on the Stone horse proposal. Kathy Williams (R2) expressed concerns about the BOD making these changes without consulting the hobby at large. It was pointed out that the policy changes were to reflect how the division had been split and judged only at NAN for the past few years, and that the language change was to reflect the reality of what was happening. Janna Shepherd (PR) later reported that Kathy had posted part of the policy language to the Region 2 Yahoo Group. It was noted that the language posted did not include the full proposal, without any rationale for the changes. In light of the discussion being prematurely leaked, other reps asked if they could also share the information. Apr 8 -- Dayle Steinke (MAC) advised that she would inventory the trophy plaques she had on hand. -- Lynn Weber (R5 and web) posted a reply from the potential programmer about anticipated costs of $40,000 for a NAMHSA database. Niki Hertzog (R9) felt this was a reasonable cost for what was involved. She also felt there was time to deal with a down payment and then raise funds for the balance, providing this could pass a membership vote. Kim Bjorgo-Thorne (VP) suggested getting other bids for the project. Other discussion reached the consensus that this price quote was probably a good deal from someone who knew the needs of the organization well. Apr 9 -- Discussion on changing the number of judges for NAN continued. The ongoing costs of holding NAN, and controlling these were brought up as concerns with the current system. Apr 13 -- Kim Bjorgo-Thorne (VP) made a post regarding professionalism on the NAMHSA Board and the responsibility board members have to act in the best interests of NAMHSA at all times. She reminded the BOD members that board business should not be made public until cleared by the appropriate authority. Jackie Arns-Rossi (RS) agreed with the sentiments but asked how they were going to be implemented. Teresa Buzzell (pres) reminded the BOD that a Code of Conduct for these situations had been on the agenda for a few years. -- Teresa Buzzell (pres) reminded the BOD that the discussion on the Stones was not a membership vote and limited to the BOD. She also expressed frustration with Kathy Williams (R2) and noted this was not the first time Kathy had posted information to her regional list without BOD permission to do so. Apr 14 -- Danielle Miller (IMS) posted the final draft on proposed membership changes. Teresa Buzzell (pres) asked reps to post information about the membership changes and be ready to discuss them. Apr 15 -- Teresa Buzzell (pres) posted an ad that would go in the Model Horse Directory. -- Kim Bjorgo-Thorne (VP) reposted the proposed changes to the wording on Stone horse collectibility judging: Addition to the judging criteria as listed in the packet: "Stone Workmanship" - Quality and execution of finish work - Accuracy/correctness/realism of customization (if applicable) - Condition - Desirability - Age/Rarity as applicable - Accuracy and realism of color for realistic or creative use of color for non-realistics - Judge's Overall Impression These workmanship guidelines also fit the older models (like the first runs of the Arabian, the Trotting Drafter etc) because workmanship should still be understood as part of the judging criteria. Age and rarity are also criteria available to the judges. Annette Dean (R7) moved to accept. Stacy Quick (R1) seconded Apr 16 -- Carmen Robertson (treas) posted the March Report Summary: March Report Summary Balance in BOA checking as of 3/31/2015: 58670.40 Balance in PayPal as of 3/31/2015: 72.22 Balance in NAMHSA accounts as of 3.30.2015: 58742.62 Apr 17 -- Kim Bjorgo-Thorne (VP) posted a poll to vote to change the configuration of Stone collectibility. Apr 20 -- The following poll closed early since all votes were received before the deadline: The phrase Stone non-breed halter/collectibility will be added to the packet with these guidelines to follow below (in keeping with the format of the rest of the packet): "Stone Collectibility" - Quality and execution of finish work - Accuracy/correctness/realism of customization (if applicable) - Condition - Desirability - Age/Rarity as applicable - Accuracy and realism of color for realistic or creative use of color for non-realistics - Judge's Overall Impression YES: Region 1 Stacy Quick Region 3 Pauline Entin Region 4 Lindsay Diamond Region 5 Lynn Weber Region 6 Jackie Moore Region 7 Annette Dean Region 8 Jenna Murphy Region 9 Niki Hertzog Region 10 Sharon Mossy Region 11 Sandra Gibson Vice President NO: Region 2 Kathy Williams ABSTENTIONS: None Apr 21 -- Kim Bjorgo-Thorne (VP) opened a poll to accept the NAN show packet. Apr 22 -- Jenna Murphy (R8) posted a question from a head of a local showing organization asking how the new membership structure would affect group organizations such as theirs. It was advised that each member of the board get a membership and use that for show holding duties. Apr 23 -- The poll to accept the NAN show packet closed, with all voting members of the BOD voting to accept the packet. Apr 25 -- Teresa Buzzell (pres) advised that NAN registration was open. Apr 26 -- Lindsay Diamond (R4 and SMS) posted the newly qualified shows: NAMHSA Approved Show List 4/2615 Just a reminder to send your show applications to show-secretary@namhsa.org. Upcoming Shows: April 11, 2015 will be Jane Morehouse’s annual revival of her Fantastic Plastic Classic show in San Martin, CA. This will be FPC’s 12th year! Congratulations to Jane for bringing us this amazing show year after year.http://fantasticplasticclassic.com/ The next day at the same show hall (April 12, 2015) the Bay Area All Halter Custom Classic and China Show (BAAHCCCS) will be held. Robin Kent and Marie Sobieski will be our show holders. BAAHCCCS is another show that has been in existence a long time - since 2002! http://www.gcmhs.org/baahcccs/ The Preakness Saturday (May 16th) will also be Sharon and Phil Massouris’ First Show Of The New Season (FSOTNS). Sharon and Phil host the all mini show in their home in Anaheim, CA. This is this show’s 6th year! Sharon feeds us like royalty, we all get to have fun and see beautiful minis and watch the Preakness, so it’s always a great day. And then June brings us NAN in Palm Springs, California! R3 Region 3 Report We had four great shows in the Region between late March and early April! I sense some MSOTY nominations brewing... Jewel Heist Live and Fiesta de Phoenix were co-located and held the last weekend in March - the 28th and 29th. I was very sad to miss this show, but heard some great reports. From Evelyn Spitzer: "The show went really well and was lots of fun. Great raffles, awards and a chance to win some special stuff. The ribbons were stunning in design and color. Lots of entrants for both shows. Very nice large room and the tables were the longest I have ever had at any show. I loved being able to show some of my super old Breyers in the Vintage Division that Sommer [Prosser]offered. Sommer's Mom, Darlene Brueger, made us a really nice lunch and it was free! Super good sandwiches and lunch plates." On April 4 in Tucson, we had a No Frills Performance show. There were some great performance entries from the performance junkies in the Southeastern part of our region. I expect some of these set ups to make an encore at NAN 2015! In Boulder, Colorado, the Classic Classic, a show for - you guessed it - classic scale models, was held in April 4. Teresa Fedak attended and reported that while she wasn't sure how many people would come for a classic scale-only show, the turnout was great: "As I recall, one of the foal classes, think it was stock foal, had 51 entrants, before it was spit. There were some new faces also, it's always nice to gain new showers. I know I had a great time, and think everyone else did as well. Now that we've gotten back into the swing of showing, we are looking forward to Springamathing in May." We've got two more shows in April in Phoenix - CassAway Live on April 18 and Arizona Live on April 25. After that, everyone will need to work on their NAN entries! Pauline Entin R4 Region 4 - hello!! The 2014-2015 year is winding down. April has had a few shows in the region, including the CCR Double Judged Spring Model Horse Show in Randolph, WI on April 4th. April 25th is Brenda Metcalf's Pie Show in Hazel Green. This is a popular and well attended show, and it sounds like more good pie will be had at the show! The first show of the 2015-2016 year will be M.O.M. Live in Black River Falls, WI. Deb Johnson hosts a great show - be sure to check it out! Good luck to anyone in Region 4 who will be heading to NAN in Palm Springs!! Registration will be opening soon - be sure to stay tuned for more details! R5 Here in Region 5 March brought us the Mid Kansas All CM Halter Show in Rose Hill, KS, kicking off our spring shows. April brings us three shows, Hog Wild! and Tornado Alley in Tulsa, OK, and Lemmonade Live in Magnolia, TX. May's only show is Indian Nations Live in Dewey, OK. The summer will bring us the BYO in Sanger, TX and Labor Day Live in Magnolia, TX. We should have most of the usual fall shows in the region, although Cajun Country Live in Louisiana is on hiatus this year. R6 Hello All! Carolina Gold Classic was held March 14 in Monroe, NC. This is always a fantastic show and 2015 was no exception. Entrants from several different regions were in attendance at this sold out show and the raffle item tables were overflowing! Awards included NIB models, rosettes, and pony paks, and every first place horse received a stablemate! The competition was super tough and everyone should be proud of their placings. CGC is a show not to be missed! The next show in Region 6 will be Palmetto State Live on April 25 in Irmo, SC, followed by MITS (Models In The Sunshine) on May 9 and 10 in Leesburg, FL and The Hollow Horse All Foal Show on June 20 in Cumming, GA. See you at the shows! R7 Region 7 Report April is here and the grass is finally green! In March, we had two shows, The first one was the Sixth Annual New Year's Bash in Ashland, OH hosted by Chesna Wertz . The Second show, hosted by Cristy Brown, was Model Horse Mania in Nicholasville, KY. This show was a benefit for the Jessamine County Animal Shelter.
